Adobe Announces New CEO and Market Reaction

Adobe disclosed that Anil Chakravarthy will assume the roles of president and chief executive officer on December 1, succeeding longtime CEO Shantanu Narayen, who will transition to executive chair and work with Chakravarthy on the company’s broader transformation. The board’s special committee conducted a six‑and‑a‑half‑month selection process and unanimously approved the appointment. Shares of Adobe fell approximately 3 % in pre‑market trading on Friday after the announcement.

Background of Anil Chakravarthy

Chakravarthy joined Adobe in January 2020 as executive vice president and general manager of the Digital Experience business. He later took charge of worldwide field operations and was promoted to president of Digital Experience and worldwide field operations in December 2021. In his tenure he expanded the Customer Experience Orchestration business, contributing to products such as Adobe CX Enterprise, GenStudio and Brand Visibility, and helped scale the Adobe Experience Platform while integrating the acquisitions of Workfront and Semrush. Prior to Adobe, he served as chief executive of enterprise‑cloud data‑management firm Informatica for four years and held senior roles at Symantec, VeriSign, and McKinsey & Company.

Outgoing Leadership

Shantanu Narayen, who has led Adobe for decades, said Chakravarthy was the right leader to guide the company through an AI‑driven period of growth. Narayen will move to the role of executive chair, continuing to support the leadership transition and Adobe’s transformation agenda.

Analyst Commentary and Future Outlook

Jefferies analysts noted that the market had expected David Wadhwani, head of the creative unit, to be the successor given his responsibility for three‑quarters of Adobe’s revenue. They suggested that Wadhwani’s departure could signal further organizational changes. Adobe is scheduled to report its third‑quarter fiscal 2026 results on September 10, with investors expected to focus on the company’s AI strategy, adoption of new AI‑powered products, and growth outlook under the incoming leadership.
