Advent International and Stripe abandon PayPal takeover
Advent International (ticker BO:ADVO) and payments processor Stripe have terminated discussions on a potential acquisition of PayPal Holdings, ending a pursuit that had involved an offer of more than $50 billion, according to Bloomberg News sources. The proposed transaction was described as potentially ranking among the largest leveraged buyouts ever contemplated.
PayPal’s market reaction and valuation
Following the emergence of takeover speculation, PayPal’s share price had fallen sharply, but stronger‑than‑expected second‑quarter earnings and the subsequent abandonment of the deal have helped lift the stock by over 40% in the current quarter. This rally has raised PayPal’s market capitalization to approximately $52.6 billion, as reported by Bloomberg.
Leadership change at PayPal
In March, PayPal replaced its chief executive Alex Chriss with Enrique Lores, a move aimed at reviving growth and modernising the business amid heightened competition from Apple and Alphabet.
Potential for future offers
Bloomberg noted that the consortium of Advent and Stripe could return with another offer if circumstances change, though no specific timeline or conditions were disclosed.
