Programme Announcement
Ahmedabad University’s Bagchi School of Public Health has launched a new Master of Science in Health Data Science, a two‑year programme that will admit its inaugural cohort on July 1, 2027. The degree is designed to equip professionals with the ability to bridge health sciences, statistics, computing, and analytical methods for big data, thereby improving both human and planetary health.
Curriculum Structure
The curriculum comprises one year of coursework followed by a one‑year mentored interdisciplinary industry internship. Coursework integrates statistics, computer science, artificial intelligence, informatics, biomedical engineering, ethics, and core public health concepts. Students will study emerging approaches for analysing complex health data, including medical imaging (pathology and radiology), multi‑omics (metabolomics, genomics and other omics), exposome data, and other high‑dimensional datasets. Advanced methodological training covers multivariate and discriminant analysis, machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and integrative data analysis.
Learning Pathway and Outcomes
The programme follows a progressive learning pathway that supports entrants from diverse academic backgrounds. Learning is centred on methodological rigour, real‑world health data, collaborative assignments, and applied projects. Graduates will be competent to apply data‑driven solutions for evidence‑based decision‑making on complex health problems and are prepared for roles across healthcare, biomedical research, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, digital health organisations, hospitals, public‑health agencies, government bodies, academia, and other national and international institutions.
Alignment with National Initiatives
The launch is positioned to respond to the growing availability of digital health infrastructure and health data in India and aligns with national initiatives such as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. It emphasizes ethical practice, responsible artificial intelligence, and interdisciplinary collaboration, ensuring solutions are technically robust, socially responsible, and meaningful for varied stakeholders.
Leadership Commentary
Dean of the Bagchi School of Public Health, Professor Kaumudi Joshipura, stated that the school’s mission is to improve human and planetary health through research, education, and action, noting the rapid transformation of technologies such as wearables, electronic health records, biomedical sensors, and AI that create new possibilities for disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and population health.
