Altruist Expands AI‑Driven Financial Planning Capabilities Ahead of Vanguard Acquisition
Wealth‑technology platform Altruist has launched an artificial‑intelligence‑driven financial planning agent embedded in its Hazel platform. The new tool automates strategy generation across six core advisory workflows, including retirement planning, tax strategy, and estate planning, thereby reducing the hours traditionally required for manual advisor work.
Hazel continues to ingest client intelligence from meeting transcripts, documents, and communication logs, but all quantitative calculations are performed by dedicated calculation engines rather than generative language models. To meet institutional privacy standards, the platform operates under zero‑data‑retention agreements that forbid third‑party AI providers from storing client data or using it for model training.
The capability is being made available to any registered investment advisor, irrespective of whether the advisor custodies assets on Altruist’s self‑clearing brokerage engine. Chief Executive Officer Jason Wenk stated that the AI enables an individual advisor to produce outputs comparable to a full specialist team, marking the second phase of Altruist’s broader rollout of advanced planning solutions.
While the financial terms of the takeover were not disclosed in the August 26 announcement, Axios reported that Vanguard will pay $4.6 billion in cash for Altruist. This price represents a substantial increase from Altruist’s $1.9 billion post‑money valuation in early 2025, which followed more than $600 million of venture‑capital funding.
Vanguard’s Chief Executive Officer Salim Ramji framed the acquisition as a strategic move to overcome capacity constraints in the advisory market by pairing automated digital workflows with human advisory relationships, positioning Vanguard to compete more directly with custodial giants such as Charles Schwab and Fidelity.
The transaction is expected to close later this year. Post‑close, Altruist will continue to operate as a standalone business under Vanguard ownership, preserving its development momentum and brand identity while providing Vanguard with a direct technology bridge into the independent wealth‑management space.
