Amazon Launches Model Context Protocol Server
Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) announced the launch of an open‑source Model Context Protocol (MCP) server on Tuesday, designed to enable AI assistants to search and preview datasets hosted on the Registry of Open Data on AWS. The MCP server connects AI tools such as Kiro and Claude Code to more than 1,100 datasets contributed by over 400 organizations, including NASA, NOAA, the National Institutes of Health and the Allen Institute. The datasets cover domains such as satellite imagery, life sciences, climate and geospatial information.
The tool allows researchers to pose natural‑language queries and receive relevant datasets, associated metadata and preview samples. Users can locate specific datasets, explore related metadata and resources, and preview Amazon S3 bucket structures and file contents before undertaking deeper analysis. The server provides three core capabilities: discovery through natural‑language search, exploration of dataset metadata and similar resources, and evaluation via previews of file structures and content samples. Integration with MCP‑compatible AI assistants is achieved through uv configuration commands.
The MCP project is released under the Apache 2.0 license and is publicly available on GitHub. The article reporting the launch was generated with AI assistance and reviewed by an editor.
