American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ:AAL) announced on 27 August 2026 that it will add seven new international routes in calendar year 2027. Tickets for the new services will be available for purchase beginning 31 August 2026.
New Routes and Launch Dates
- From Philadelphia the carrier will commence service to Porto, Portugal; Reykjavik, Iceland; and Vienna, Austria, with the Vienna flight slated to begin on 6 May 2027, making American the sole U.S. airline serving that city.
- From New York the airline will open routes to Amsterdam, Netherlands and Nice, France.
- From Charlotte a new daily flight to Barcelona, Spain will be introduced.
- A Chicago‑Tokyo service will start on 19 March 2027, timed to capture demand during Japan’s cherry‑blossom season.
- A fourth daily flight on the New York‑London Heathrow corridor will commence on 28 March 2027.
All seven routes are scheduled to operate daily throughout the summer‑2027 season.
Strategic Context
The expansion aligns with a broader industry focus on international and premium travel, which has shown greater resilience than the domestic market. American Airlines is concurrently adding higher‑end seats and upgrading its long‑haul product to compete with Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE:DAL) and United Airlines Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:UAL) for corporate and leisure travelers.

United Airlines announced in the same week that it will add ten new destinations across Europe and Asia in 2027, deploying Airbus SE’s new long‑range narrow‑body aircraft.
