Amgen Launches First Amgen Scholars Program in India
Amgen (NASDAQ: AMGN) issued a press release on July 31, 2026, announcing the launch of the first Amgen Scholars Program in India, hosted by the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT‑Hyderabad). The program is supported by a two‑year commitment from Amgen extending through the summer of 2027.
The inaugural cohort consists of ten undergraduate scholars drawn from India, Vietnam, Qatar and Dubai. These students are enrolled in science, engineering or related undergraduate programmes at universities across Asia and have been selected by an expert committee at IIIT‑Hyderabad on the basis of academic excellence, research aptitude, motivation for doctoral studies and a demonstrated interest in applying artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to drug discovery.
During a two‑month residential research stint, scholars will work alongside faculty mentors at IIIT‑Hyderabad on AI‑enabled projects covering fundamental sciences, drug design and discovery, healthcare, cheminformatics and genomics. The curriculum includes seminars, networking events and culminates in a scientific poster presentation. A regional Amgen Scholars Symposium is scheduled to take place in Tokyo in August 2026.
"Scientific breakthroughs begin with curious minds and meaningful opportunities to learn," said Naveen Gullapalli, Managing Director, Amgen India. "We are proud to bring the Amgen Scholars Program to India and hope to inspire talented students to pursue research careers while strengthening India's scientific ecosystem." Deva Priyakumar, Professor & Dean (R&D) at IIIT‑Hyderabad, added that the program aligns with the institute’s research‑led education approach and offers an exceptional opportunity for undergraduates to contribute to cutting‑edge AI research in healthcare. Sandeep Shukla, Professor & Director at IIIT‑Hyderabad, emphasized that AI is transforming every stage of biotech research and that the program equips students with interdisciplinary skills needed for future healthcare challenges.
