Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah will preside over Police Commemoration Day events at the National Police Memorial in New Delhi on October 21, 2026. The main function will include paying homage to police martyrs with a joint parade of Central Armed Police Forces and Delhi Police.
As part of the commemorations, Shah will flag off a nationwide motorcycle rally themed 'Fight Against Drugs' involving approximately 90 police riders from States/UTs including Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi. Participants also include Central Armed Police Forces (CRPF, CISF, BSF, SSB, ITBP, and NSG) and Central Police Organisations (RPF, NDRF, and NIA). All riders will converge at Ekta Nagar, Gujarat to join the Ekta Parade on October 31, 2026.
The event commemorates the October 21, 1959 Hot Springs ambush in Ladakh where ten policemen were killed by heavily armed Chinese troops. Since then, October 21 has been observed annually as Police Commemoration Day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the National Police Memorial to the nation on Police Commemoration Day-2018 in recognition of police sacrifices and their role in national security.
The National Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi comprises a 30-foot high granite monolith cenotaph central sculpture, a Wall of Valour with engraved names of martyrs since Independence, and a museum showcasing policing history in India. The memorial is open to the public all days except Mondays, with CAPFs organizing band displays, parades, and retreat ceremonies every Saturday and Sunday evening.
Additional commemorative events will be held at NPM from October 22-30, including visits by martyrs' family members, police band displays, motorcycle rallies, Run for Martyrs, blood donation camps, essay/painting competitions for children, and video film displays showcasing police sacrifice and valor. Similar programs will be organized by all police forces across the country during this period. The event will be telecast live on Doordarshan, webcast on police websites, and covered by AIR and media.
