Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah will perform the Bhoomi Pujan of Amul Bengal Dairy Project, the world's largest curd production plant, at New Town Convention Centre in Kolkata on 19 July 2026. The ₹700 crore project at Howrah Food Park will process 30 lakh litres of milk per day and produce 10 lakh kilograms (1,000 metric tonnes) of curd and other cultured dairy products daily.
The plant's detailed production capacity includes packaging of 10 lakh litres of milk, processing of two lakh litres of UHT milk, production of one lakh litres of ice cream, 20 metric tonnes of paneer, 10 metric tonnes of ghee, 10 metric tonnes of sweets, and approximately 2.5 lakh packs of flavoured milk daily. The project currently involves more than 1.25 lakh milk-producing farmers in West Bengal, including over 30,000 women milk producers, with daily milk procurement of approximately nine lakh litres.
During the event, several additional initiatives will be launched: an MoU will be signed between Bharat Taxi and the Department of Information Technology and Electronics (DoIT&E) of West Bengal Government for expansion of mobility services; registration certificates will be presented to one of the 200+ newly constituted Dairy Cooperative Societies and one of the 11 newly registered Multipurpose Rural Cooperative Societies; and the e-RCS portal for digital administration of cooperative societies will be launched.
Infrastructure development includes laying foundation stones for 14 storage warehouses with total capacity of 1,400 metric tonnes across 10 districts at an estimated cost of ₹5.98 crore, and inauguration of two warehouses (100 metric tonnes capacity each) in South 24 Parganas and Cooch Behar constructed at a total cost of ₹73.61 lakh. The project aims to expand modern processing, value addition, and marketing facilities in West Bengal's dairy sector while enhancing farmers' incomes through better market access.
