Announcement
Anthropic disclosed on 1 July 2026 that the United States government has removed export‑control restrictions on its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 artificial‑intelligence models. The company said it will begin restoring public access to both models starting Wednesday, following a temporary shutdown that began in early June.
Background of the Restrictions
In June, Anthropic abruptly disabled public access to the Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models after receiving a directive from the White House ordering the blocking of foreign nationals from using the models. The order was motivated by concerns that the models could be leveraged to develop critical cybersecurity exploits.
Interim Measures and Partial Release
Prior to the full shutdown, Anthropic reported that Washington had permitted the startup to make Mythos available to a limited set of “trusted” U.S. organisations. This partial release signalled a possible reversal of the broader export‑control order.
Consultation and Initial Public Release
Anthropic indicated that it had consulted with several major U.S. organisations and banks regarding the potential risks associated with the models. After these consultations, the company publicly released the Fable and Mythos models in early June, before the export‑control directive was enforced.
Restoration Plan
The firm’s social‑media post confirmed that, with the export controls now lifted, it will restore unrestricted access to the Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models from Wednesday onward.
