Overview
Anthropic PBC has entered into a six‑year agreement to purchase AI cloud computing capacity from Nscale Ltd. for a total consideration of $45 billion. The contract covers the first of three buildings at Nscale’s Monarch campus in West Virginia and will provide approximately 460 megawatts of power, an amount sufficient to supply about 345,000 U.S. households at any one time.
Technical Details
Nscale will equip the data centre with Nvidia Corp.’s Vera Rubin AI chips, which are slated to become operational in late 2027. When the entire Monarch campus is completed, it will deliver roughly 1.35 gigawatts of power, with the on‑site power plant and full campus development costing an estimated $71 billion, of which $47 billion is earmarked for AI chips. The remaining two buildings are expected to start delivering power in 2028.
Strategic Context
The deal follows Anthropic’s recent AI‑computing agreements: a $50 billion contract with Fluidstack, a $10 billion arrangement with Volta Infra Holdings Ltd., and a $45 billion agreement with SpaceX. Anthropic was valued at $965 billion in May. For Nscale, securing Anthropic as a tenant comes after Microsoft Corp. withdrew its letter of intent for the West Virginia site earlier in the summer, accelerating Nscale’s preparation for an initial public offering anticipated as early as next month. Nscale is part of a group of firms known as “neoclouds” that lease AI‑focused computing power.
