Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai Launches Dedicated Sleep Disorders Clinic
Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai announced the opening of a dedicated Sleep Disorders Clinic aimed at tackling a substantial, yet largely hidden, public‑health issue in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The hospital estimates that between 45 lakh and 50 lakh residents across Mumbai and Navi Mumbai suffer from sleep‑disordered breathing, but 80‑90% of these individuals remain undiagnosed because symptoms such as loud snoring and excessive daytime fatigue are frequently dismissed as normal.
The clinic’s specialists highlighted that roughly one in five middle‑aged working men and women are at high risk of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). Dr. Jayalakshmi T. K., Senior Consultant – Pulmonology at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, warned that untreated OSA can increase the risk of major cardiovascular complications by two to three times, underscoring the urgency of early detection and treatment.
To address this gap, the new multidisciplinary clinic brings together pulmonologists, neurologists, ENT specialists, psychiatrists and sleep technologists. It offers integrated diagnosis, sleep studies, personalised treatment plans and long‑term follow‑up for a wide spectrum of sleep disorders. Patient stories shared at the awareness meet illustrated how accurate diagnosis and timely therapy can markedly improve energy levels, blood pressure control, and overall quality of life.
Regional CEO – Western Region, Mr. Arunesh Punetha, emphasized that “sleep is not a luxury, it is a pillar of good health,” urging the public to monitor sleep quality with the same diligence applied to blood pressure or blood sugar. He stated that the clinic’s goal extends beyond treatment to raising community awareness about the health risks associated with ignored sleep symptoms.
