Overview
On 29 October 2026, Apollo Hospitals, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, performed the first surgery in India using the Da Vinci 5 robotic‑assisted surgical system, the next‑generation platform developed by Intuitive.
System Features and Clinical Scope
The Da Vinci 5 system incorporates Force Feedback technology, allowing surgeons to sense tissue pressure when using compatible instruments, and offers more than 150 technological enhancements such as advanced 3D imaging, improved instrument controls and a redesigned console for surgeon comfort. The platform is currently deployed across five major specialties at the hospital: cardiac surgery, oncology surgery, gynaecological surgery, gastrointestinal surgery and urology surgery.
Executive Statements
Dr Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairperson of Apollo Hospitals, said that being among the first Indian hospitals to introduce Da Vinci 5 reflects Apollo’s continued commitment to advancing healthcare through sustained investment in medical technology, and that the rollout at Bannerghatta Road builds on the group’s existing robotic‑assisted surgery experience. Dr Suneeta Reddy, Managing Director of Apollo Hospitals, noted that the Force Feedback capability gives surgeons a better sense of pressure during delicate manoeuvres, supporting greater awareness and informed decision‑making while ensuring patient‑centred care.
Apollo Hospitals Scale
Apollo Hospitals, founded by Dr Prathap C. Reddy in 1983, now comprises 76 hospitals with a total of 10,400 beds, more than 6,800 pharmacies, over 2,900 clinics and 500 telemedicine centres. In cardiac sciences alone, the network has performed over 300,000 angioplasties and 500,000 surgeries. The organization employs approximately 120,000 family members dedicated to delivering care.
