Apple has requested its supply‑chain partners to accelerate production of its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, by increasing orders by 30% to meet robust market demand, according to Taiwan’s Economic Daily citing industry insiders.

The iPhone Duo launched globally on Friday and sold out almost instantly, with the majority of sales occurring through pre‑orders, leaving the initial inventory insufficient.

Initial shipment forecasts for the current year were about 6 million units, but the Economic Daily now estimates the volume will lie between 8 million and 10 million units. Apple projects cumulative Duo shipments to reach 33 million units by 2027.

A second wave of shipments is scheduled to commence on 22 January 2027.

The device is assembled by Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd) while its core processor is supplied by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC). Both Foxconn and TSMC saw their shares decline on the news (AAPL –0.14%, 2317 –2.00%, 2330 –1.45%).

The iPhone Duo is priced considerably higher than comparable foldable offerings from Samsung and Google, reinforcing its premium market positioning.
