Aspen Pharmacare Receives Health Canada Approval for Generic Ozempic

On Monday, 20 July 2026, Aspen Pharmacare (JSE:APN) announced that its Canadian subsidiary obtained regulatory approval from Health Canada for Aspen‑Semaglutide, a generic version of Novo Nordisk’s diabetes drug Ozempic. The approval authorises the generic semaglutide for the management of type‑2 diabetes, adding a new product to Aspen’s portfolio; the company is noted as Africa’s largest pharmaceutical firm.

The approval follows the expiry of Novo Nordisk’s patent on semaglutide, which has opened the Canadian market to multiple generic manufacturers. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Novo Nordisk’s GLP‑1 products, Ozempic for diabetes and Wegovy for weight loss.

Aspen indicated that the timing of its commercial launch in Canada will depend on the availability of the semaglutide active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) supplied by India’s Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (NSE:REDY). No further commercial or pricing details were disclosed.
