Strategic Partnership Announcement
On 9 October 2026, Astrogate Labs, an Indian deep‑tech firm specializing in free‑space optical communication (FSOC) systems for space, and Spacebeam Inc., a South Korean developer of optical ground‑station (OGS) infrastructure, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) 2026 held in Antalya, Türkiye. The MoU formalizes a strategic partnership aimed at validating, demonstrating, and commercialising end‑to‑end space‑to‑ground laser communication solutions.
Collaboration Scope and Technical Roadmap
The partnership brings together Astrogate’s AstroLink Optical Communication Terminals (OCT) – designed for satellite payloads – and Spacebeam’s Osong Optical Ground Station (OGS) platform, which receives and processes optical signals on Earth. Joint activities will commence with laser link verification and demonstration testing in terrestrial and air‑to‑ground environments, progressing to a full space‑to‑ground demonstration that integrates a satellite equipped with Astrogate’s OCT and utilizes Spacebeam’s OGS for signal reception. Additionally, the parties will explore an Optical Ground Station‑as‑a‑Service (OGSaaS) model, whereby satellite operators employing Astrogate’s terminals could access Spacebeam’s OGS network for high‑throughput data downlink, creating a potential turnkey service that combines onboard terminal and ground‑segment capabilities.
Executive Comments
Nitish K. Singh, Founder & CEO of Astrogate Labs, stated that the value of optical communications is realised when the space and ground segments operate as a unified link, and that the partnership enables the move beyond isolated technology demos toward an integrated service for satellite operators. Kim Jung‑Hoon, Founder & CEO of Spacebeam, highlighted the opportunity to leverage capabilities across India and the Republic of Korea to open new commercial pathways for space‑to‑ground optical communications globally.
Astrogate Labs Background
Astrogate Labs designs and manufactures indigenous FSOC terminals for space and high‑performance communication applications, integrating proprietary pointing, acquisition and tracking (PAT) systems, optical modems, and other subsystems. Headquartered in Bengaluru with an office in Durham, England, the company has validated its technology with end‑users such as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the University of Western Australia’s TeraNet mobile optical ground station. It is expanding its portfolio from space‑to‑ground terminals to optical inter‑satellite links.
Spacebeam Inc Background
Spacebeam Inc. develops optical ground‑station technology to enable high‑speed communication between ground stations and orbiting satellites. Its capabilities include satellite tracking, optical signal reception and decoding, and adaptive optics to maintain stable optical links through atmospheric turbulence.
Market Context
As satellite constellations and Earth‑observation missions generate ever‑larger volumes of data, efficient high‑throughput downlink becomes critical. Optical communications provide a data‑rich pathway that can complement conventional radio‑frequency (RF) systems, especially for data‑intensive missions.
