Astrogate Labs Targets 2027 First Indigenous OISL

Astrogate Labs, an Indian deep‑tech firm specializing in Free Space Optical Communication (FSOC) systems for space and defence, announced that it is developing India’s first indigenous Optical Inter‑Satellite Link (OISL) terminal with flight‑readiness targeted for 2027. The company showcased its OISL capability and performed a live demonstration of the AstroLink Micro, a 10 Gbps laser communication terminal for space‑to‑ground links, at the Bengaluru Space Expo 2026 held from 7‑9 September at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC).

Previously, Astrogate supplied an indigenously developed satellite‑to‑ground laser communication terminal to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), making it the sole Indian company to deliver this strategic technology to the national space agency. These space‑to‑ground terminals have achieved Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 8, indicating they are complete and qualified for flight.

The firm also completed cross‑compatibility testing with the University of Western Australia’s TeraNet mobile optical ground station, confirming that its terminals can interoperate with international ground‑segment infrastructure.

According to Nitish K. Singh, Founder and CEO, “Some time back, laser communication from India was a research question. Today it is a product we deliver, with ISRO as a customer. OISL is the harder problem, and it is the one that decides who builds the connectivity layer for future LEO constellations. We are building it, with technology owned end‑to‑end in India.”

Co‑Founder and CTO Jayaraman Yogeshwaran added that the core building blocks of the OISL terminal – the Pointing, Acquisition and Tracking (PAT) system, the optical modem, stabilized coarse‑tracking gimbals and system‑level integration – were originally developed and validated for the company’s space‑to‑ground terminals and have been carried over to the inter‑satellite link, placing flight readiness within reach by 2027.

Astrogate identifies three primary markets for the OISL terminal: satellite backhaul, sovereign defence constellations and orbital compute. By enabling direct satellite‑to‑satellite communication, the OISL can move data across a constellation before routing it to Earth, addressing bandwidth and spectrum constraints faced by conventional RF links. The company cites SpaceX’s 2025 Starlink progress report, which documented more than 13,000 bidirectional laser links operating as an optical mesh in orbit, as a benchmark for the architecture’s scalability.

Headquartered in Bengaluru with an additional office in Durham, England, Astrogate Labs continues to validate its technology with end‑users such as ISRO and the University of Western Australia while expanding its portfolio from space‑to‑ground terminals to OISL solutions.
