AVNL Jabalpur Tanks Overhaul Project Launch
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav performed the Bhoomi Pujan for the T-Series Tanks Overhaul Project at Vehicle Factory, Jabalpur on August 27, 2026. The project, executed by Mini Ratna Defence PSU Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL), involves creation of overhauling facilities for T-72 and T-90 tanks with an estimated cost of ₹472 crore.
The facility is designed to overhaul 80 tanks per annum to ensure timely availability of overhauled tanks to the Indian Army, boosting operational readiness. This addresses the Army's annual requirement of 230 overhauled tanks, with Heavy Vehicles Factory, Avadi currently handling 150 tanks annually. AVNL brings 25 years of experience in overhauling T-72 and T-90 variant tanks.
Strategic Significance and Economic Impact
The project represents a significant milestone in India's defense self-reliance journey, with the Raksha Mantri emphasizing that nations with advanced technologies, resilient supply chains, robust industrial capacity, and dynamic innovation capabilities are better equipped to withstand prolonged conflicts. The government aims to ensure defense forces are not dependent on foreign supply chains for critical requirements.
The overhaul facility will create significant opportunities for MSMEs by generating demand for mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic components, assemblies, and subsystems. This will help establish a robust supply chain while creating avenues for local MSMEs in manufacturing and ancillary services, promoting greater participation of local industry and contributing to industrial ecosystem development.
Broader Defense Manufacturing Context
Shri Rajnath Singh highlighted the government's achievements in defense manufacturing, noting record defense production of approximately ₹1.80 lakh crore in Financial Year 2025-26, up from ₹46,000 crore in 2014. Defense exports reached an all-time high of approximately ₹39,000 crore from less than ₹1,000 crore previously. The Madhya Pradesh government's initiatives, including the Global Investors Summit 2025 and 'Invest MP 3.0' approval system, are establishing the state as an attractive investment hub with 3,073 hectares of land identified in the Gwalior-Chambal region for defense manufacturing and proposed investments exceeding ₹16,960 crore.
