Acquisition Overview
Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced on 26 August 2026 that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire DuckLabs, an Amsterdam‑based company that developed the open‑source analytical database DuckDB. The agreement is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close shortly.
Strategic Rationale
The acquisition builds on a collaboration that began in 2024 between AWS and DuckLabs and is intended to make AWS analytics services faster, simpler and more cost‑effective for customers.
Integration and Leadership
When the transaction closes, the DuckLabs team located in Amsterdam will become part of AWS. The company’s founders, Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt, who created DuckDB and co‑founded DuckLabs, will continue to lead the team and steer the technical direction of the open‑source project.
Open‑Source Project Status
AWS is not acquiring the DuckDB open‑source project itself; DuckDB will remain free and open‑source under the independent DuckDB Foundation and will continue to be distributed under the MIT licence.
Executive Comment
Andy Warfield, Amazon vice‑president and distinguished engineer, said, “For almost a decade, the DuckDB team has worked with the idea of building a tool that lets people work with data, with confidence… I am so excited at the opportunity to work with them even more closely.”
No financial terms of the transaction were disclosed.
