Announcement

Bank of Montreal (TSX:BMO) announced a restructuring of its international capital markets division, placing it under unified leadership.

Leadership Changes

Effective 1 November 2026, Richard Couzens, currently head of BMO Europe, Middle East and Africa, will assume the role of head of international capital markets, expanding his responsibilities. The appointment was disclosed by Alan Tannenbaum, chief executive of BMO’s capital markets business.

Asia head Chris Taves will retire, with his resignation taking effect on 31 January 2027. Taves joined BMO in 2009 and was appointed head of Asia for BMO Capital Markets in January 2024.

During the first quarter of 2027, Taves will continue to work with Couzens to support the Asia team, collaborating with Glenn Anson, Asia head of global markets, and Lisa Xia, head of China.

Context

The reorganization comes as Canadian banks broaden their capital markets activities internationally to diversify amid trade tensions between the United States and Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s international visits and business‑friendly policies have also bolstered investor sentiment.
