BioArctic‑Eli Lilly Collaboration Overview
On 22 June 2026, Swedish biopharmaceutical company BioArctic AB announced a research and collaboration agreement with Eli Lilly and Company. The partnership will combine BioArctic’s proprietary BrainTransporter technology with an undisclosed Lilly drug candidate targeting neurodegeneration.
Financial Terms
BioArctic will receive an upfront payment of $30 million. In addition, the company is eligible for milestone payments of up to $770 million contingent on development and regulatory achievements. If the product reaches market, BioArctic will also earn tiered mid‑single‑digit royalties on global product sales.
Roles and Rights
Under the agreement, Eli Lilly will assume full responsibility for global development and commercialization of the combined drug candidate and any related products. BioArctic retains all rights to use the BrainTransporter platform for indications and modalities outside the scope of this and its three other existing BrainTransporter agreements.
Prior BrainTransporter Partnerships
This collaboration is BioArctic’s fourth partnership leveraging the BrainTransporter platform. Earlier agreements include:
- A research evaluation agreement with Eisai concerning BAN2802.
- A global license agreement with Bristol Myers Squibb for BioArctic’s PyroGlutamate‑amyloid‑beta antibody program.
- An option, collaboration and license agreement with Novartis.
Technology Description
The BrainTransporter technology facilitates drug passage across the blood‑brain barrier by targeting the transferrin receptor. Active transport via this mechanism can achieve broader brain distribution, potentially improving efficacy, safety profile, and dosing convenience.
Historical Innovation
BioArctic previously invented Leqembi (lecanemab), described as the world’s first drug proven to slow disease progression and reduce cognitive impairment in early Alzheimer’s disease. Leqembi was developed with partner Eisai, which handles regulatory interactions and global commercialization.
Market Reaction and Executive Comment
Following the announcement, BioArctic’s shares rose over 2 %. CEO Gunilla Osswald stated, “I’m excited by today’s announcement and proud that a large pharmaceutical company sees potential in our proprietary BrainTransporter technology. Lilly shares our ambition to do more for patients with severe neurological disorders, and this collaboration is a testament to that.”
