Bitcoin Price Momentum and Macro backdrop
Bitcoin edged higher on Monday, adding 0.5% to reach $79,038.3 by 17:44 ET (21:44 GMT). The rally positions the world’s largest cryptocurrency for a monthly increase exceeding 25% in August.
Federal Reserve commentary and rate expectations
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, speaking at the Jackson Hole symposium, reaffirmed the Fed’s 2% inflation target. Although he did not announce a specific hike, markets interpreted his tone as hawkish, raising the probability of a 25‑basis‑point rate increase in September to 60.4% according to CME FedWatch. Traders await upcoming non‑farm payroll data for further guidance.
Impact of higher rates on crypto assets
Higher interest rates are traditionally adverse for speculative assets such as Bitcoin. The August rally was largely driven by a sharp decline in Treasury yields following a bond‑market intervention by the U.S. Treasury, which temporarily eased rate‑related pressure on crypto.
U.S.–Iran escalation and oil market reaction
The cryptocurrency market, alongside broader risk‑assets, was rattled by renewed U.S.–Iran military exchanges—the first in over a month. Oil prices spiked on the news, reviving inflation and rate‑rise concerns. President Donald Trump threatened to strike Iran’s key oil export hub, Kharg Island, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signaled additional sanctions on Tehran.
MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin purchase
MicroStrategy (referred to as “Strategy”) resumed Bitcoin buying after a two‑month pause, acquiring 4,603 coins for $369.7 million at an average price of $80,318 per coin. The acquisition was financed through a $602.8 million common‑stock sale; $151.8 million of the proceeds were used to repurchase STRC preferred shares, and the remainder was added to cash reserves. Post‑purchase, MicroStrategy’s total holding stands at 845,050 Bitcoin, accumulated at a total cost of $63.73 billion, averaging $75,412 per coin.
Altcoin performance in August
Ethereum (ETH) was largely unchanged at $2,480.79, on track for a 33% monthly rise. Cardano, XRP, and Solana each surged more than 18% during the month. Binance Coin (BNB) slipped 0.7% on the day but is projected to finish August up nearly 18%. Among meme tokens, Dogecoin posted an approximate 18% gain, while $TRUMP advanced over 73%.
