Blue Origin Secures $700 Million NASA Mars Telecommunications Network Contract
Blue Origin received a firm‑fixed‑price contract valued at $700 million from NASA on 2 September 2026 to develop the Mars Telecommunications Network, a communications system intended to support both current and future missions to the Red Planet. Under the agreement, Blue Origin must design, develop, integrate, launch and operate a high‑performance telecommunications spacecraft that will orbit Mars and transmit science data, imagery, navigation information and mission communications. The contract stipulates that the orbiter be delivered to NASA no later than 31 December 2028.
The architecture consists of a single telecommunications spacecraft placed in Mars orbit, providing a dedicated link for spacecraft operating on and around the planet. NASA expects the network to become operational at Mars by 2030, delivering greater capacity, reliability and operational flexibility to accommodate the growing demand for data from an increasing number of Mars missions.
The award follows NASA’s request for proposal issued in May, reflecting the agency’s broader strategy of leveraging private‑sector capabilities for space communications and navigation services, complementing its commercial partnerships for Earth‑orbit and lunar activities. The network will be managed by NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program.
