Canada Loans $141M to Xanadu Quantum

The Canadian federal government announced a loan of C$195 million (approximately US$140.78 million) to Xanadu Quantum (TSX:XNDU) to finance the construction of a photonics manufacturing facility in Toronto. This loan constitutes the federal portion of a potential total government support package of up to C$390 million that Xanadu disclosed in March. The company expects to secure the remaining up to C$195 million from the Ontario provincial government in the near term, although the specific terms of the federal loan were not disclosed.

The funding represents the largest Canadian government commitment to quantum technology to date. Xanadu, founded in 2016 by an individual identified as Weedbrook, is developing a quantum computer that relies on photonic technology—light‑based components similar to those used in fiber‑optic internet cables. Unlike many competing quantum computers that require ultra‑low temperatures, Xanadu’s system is designed to operate at room temperature. However, the quantum computer is not yet commercially available, and the technology remains vulnerable to errors caused by environmental disturbances such as sound.

The announcement follows a broader international push in quantum computing, notably a plan announced by the Trump administration in the United States to invest $2 billion in equity stakes across nine quantum‑computing companies to preserve U.S. leadership in the sector.
