Overview

Canadian Solar announced that its U.S. manufacturing arm, CS PowerTech, has invested nearly $1 billion to commission a new solar‑cell manufacturing facility in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The plant began operations on 24 July 2026 and is intended to address a pronounced production gap in the United States solar market.

Capacity and Employment

The Indiana facility is designed to produce 6 gigawatts of heterojunction solar cells per year, a technology that delivers higher conversion efficiency than conventional cell designs. When the plant reaches full operational capacity in early 2027, it is expected to employ more than 1,200 workers.

Strategic Context

The project represents the first U.S. plant dedicated to heterojunction cell production and aligns with U.S. government efforts to build a domestic solar supply chain through tax incentives and trade policies. The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act introduced tax credits for advanced clean‑energy manufacturing, spurring growth in solar‑module assembly capacity, yet domestic cell production has lagged, leaving manufacturers dependent on imports. China currently controls roughly 80 % of the global solar supply chain, a reliance the new facility seeks to reduce.
