Chandigarh University announced that 73 of its student‑athletes, including 29 women, have been appointed to government positions under the sports quota for the 2025‑26 academic year. The selections are based on medal‑winning performances at state, national and international competitions across a range of sports such as athletics, kayaking and canoeing, badminton, boxing, fencing, hockey, judo, kabaddi, swimming, rowing, rugby, table tennis, weightlifting, wrestling, basketball and volleyball.
Of the 73, 56 athletes (76 %) have joined the Indian Army, Central Armed Police Forces and other paramilitary organisations: 17 were placed in the Border Security Force, 14 in the Central Industrial Security Force, 9 in the Indo‑Tibetan Border Police, 6 in the Indian Army, 3 in the Sashastra Seema Bal and one each in the Assam Rifles and another paramilitary force. The remaining 17 athletes secured positions in Indian Railways, the Himachal Pradesh Police, the Income Tax Department, State Bank of India, the Haryana Sports Department, the Bihar Government, and three more are pending appointment with the Uttar Pradesh Police.
Discipline‑wise, kayaking and canoeing contributed the largest number of appointments with 21 athletes. Chandigarh University had previously won 23 of the 30 gold medals, one silver and one bronze in canoeing and kayaking at the 5th edition of the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) 2025, and topped the overall KIUG 2025 medal table with 42 gold, 14 silver and 11 bronze medals. Other sport‑wise allocations include 13 rowers, 7 weightlifters, 5 each in athletics and boxing, 4 in volleyball, 9 in basketball, 3 each in fencing and kabaddi, 2 each in judo, swimming and wrestling, and one each in pencak silat, table tennis and rugby.
The university highlighted its broader sporting achievements: it became the first private institution to win the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy by securing the KIUG 2024 title with 71 medals (32 gold), and it improved its gold‑medal haul to 42 in KIUG 2025, the highest ever for a university. Across the 2025‑26 period, Chandigarh University athletes accumulated 338 medals – 147 gold, 92 silver and 99 bronze – in national, international, zonal and AIU competitions.
Chandigarh University allocates an annual budget of Rs 6.5 crore to its sports programme, providing free facilities, specialised diets, kits, travel, coaching, hostel accommodation and other support to eliminate economic constraints for its athletes.
