Patent Granted for Attendance‑Based Health Monitoring System

On August 8, 2026, in Chandigarh, India, a team of researchers from Chandigarh University was awarded a patent by the Indian Patent Office for an innovative attendance‑based health monitoring system. The invention combines biometric attendance authentication with real‑time measurement of three vital health parameters—body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure—on a single device used during routine attendance logging.

The system records these physiological signals each time a student or employee scans the biometric terminal, creating a seven‑day baseline for each individual. Deviations from the baseline are flagged confidentially and transmitted to the Human Resources department, which can then intervene with medical assistance if needed. The readings are never displayed on the terminal screen to avoid causing panic.

Prof Vikas Wasson, Professor of Computer Science & Engineering and Director (Engineering Foundations), explained that the invention addresses the growing concern of long working hours and stress that compromise physical and emotional health. He emphasized that the integration of health monitoring into an activity performed daily by millions—biometric attendance—offers a cost‑effective, scalable solution that reduces reliance on separate wearable devices.

Prof Sachin Kalsi, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Head‑Academic Operations (E‑Governance), highlighted that the platform supports digital health record management, enabling historical health data analysis for occupational safety and institutional health management. He noted that the system can be deployed across schools, colleges, coaching centres and offices without requiring additional effort from users.

The university’s Senior Managing Director, Deepinder Singh Sandhu, congratulated the researchers, noting that Chandigarh University has filed more than 6,100 patents, of which 5,800 have been published and 260 granted. The institution is ranked number one in India for filing the highest number of patents by a single entity, and 44 of its faculty members appear in the Stanford University–Elsevier list of the world’s top 2 % scientists. Chandigarh University is recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) by the Ministry of Science and Technology’s Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR).

To sustain its research ecosystem, the university allocates an annual budget of Rs 15 crore for research, operates 60 research centres and 15 centres of excellence, and manages 67 corporate‑ and government‑funded projects worth Rs 90 crore.
