Chip Wilson Divorce and Lululemon Share Decline

Chip Wilson, the 71‑year‑old billionaire founder of Lululemon Athletica, is reportedly divorcing his wife, Shannon “Summer” Wilson, after more than two decades of marriage that began in 2002. Summer Wilson, now 52, was one of Lululemon’s earliest employees and served as the founding lead designer. According to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter, the couple discussed their separation with friends and there is no prenuptial agreement in place.

The personal development coincides with heightened market uncertainty for Lululemon. On the Friday following the news, Lululemon shares plunged more than 17 % after the company cut its full‑year sales outlook, pushing the stock to its lowest level in roughly eight years. The sell‑off occurred just days before former Nike executive Heidi O’Neill is scheduled to assume the role of chief executive on 8 September, as the company confronts tougher competition and a shifting athletic‑wear market.

Wilson’s personal wealth is estimated at about US$6.1 billion by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He founded Lululemon in 1998 and helped grow the Vancouver‑based firm into a global leader in athletic apparel. Recently, Wilson ended a public proxy battle with Lululemon by securing board nominees as part of a truce; under that agreement he also pledged not to publicly disparage Lululemon for approximately 18 months.

Beyond Lululemon, Wilson holds roughly an 18 % stake in Amer Sports, the Finnish owner of brands such as Arc’teryx, a holding valued at almost US$3 billion. His asset base also includes an extensive real‑estate portfolio, featuring one of British Columbia’s most valuable homes.
