ClearWay Mobility Announces Obstacle‑Detection Attachment for Standard White Cane
ClearWay Mobility, an early‑stage assistive mobility venture founded by 17‑year‑old Mumbai student Jaiveer Talwar, has introduced a smart attachment that adds obstacle‑detection capability to the standard white cane used by visually impaired individuals. The device fits onto an existing cane and alerts the user to obstacles through vibration, with optional audio feedback, and incorporates GPS tracking to allow family members to locate the user when needed. It operates independently, requiring no smartphone, app, or change of the existing cane.
The concept originated as a school science‑fair project in 2021. Talwar pursued an internship with a prosthetics company in 2024 to gain practical exposure to mobility challenges. In 2026, a revised version of the attachment was tested with students and teachers at the Smt. Kamla Mehta Dadar School for the Blind in Mumbai, receiving encouraging feedback while highlighting safety concerns for visually impaired young women, which led to the inclusion of GPS tracking.
The attachment has been engineered around three priorities: affordability, reliability, and ease of use. Following successful testing, ClearWay Mobility has entered the manufacturing stage, with an initial batch now being produced. The next phase will focus on refining the product through additional user feedback, expanding testing with institutions, and exploring pathways to make the device accessible at scale.
