Capital Expenditure Performance
Coal India Limited recorded a capital expenditure of ₹3,399 crore during Q1 FY27 (April-June 2026), representing a 16.64% increase over the ₹2,914 crore incurred in Q1 FY26. The company surpassed its quarterly capex target of ₹3,349 crore, achieving 101.5% of the planned expenditure. This Q1 spending represents 20.60% of CIL's total annual capital expenditure target of ₹16,500 crore for FY27.
Capex Component Breakdown
- Land acquisition and related rehabilitation & resettlement (R&R) activities: ₹804 crore (23.7% of total quarterly capex)
- Railway sidings and rail corridors development: ₹754 crore
- Coal handling plants (CHPs), silos, weighbridges and roads: ₹195 crore
- Total coal evacuation infrastructure investment: ₹949 crore (27.9% of total)
- Plant & Machinery (P&M): ₹819 crore (24.1% of total), covering procurement of Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM), construction and expansion of washeries, and other plant and equipment
- Solar projects: ₹278 crore
- Joint ventures: ₹207 crore
Strategic Importance and Commentary
Land acquisition and related activities have been allocated the highest annual capex target of ₹4,173 crore out of the company's total ₹16,500 crore FY27 target, as timely land acquisition is a critical prerequisite for coal mining projects.
According to Chairman Shri B. Sairam, expenditures on land acquisition, development of coal evacuation infrastructure, and plant & machinery constitute the major components of capital expenditure, accounting for over 75% of total Q1 capex. These strategic investments have laid a strong foundation for the company to achieve its production and supply targets for the ongoing fiscal.
Diversification Initiatives
The company invested ₹278 crore in solar projects during the quarter as part of its ongoing diversification into clean energy. Investments in joint ventures amounted to ₹207 crore, reinforcing CIL's commitment to expanding its presence in renewable energy and allied businesses.

Coal India achieved a capital expenditure of ₹19,607 crore during FY 25–26, surpassing its annual target of ₹16,000 crore, reflecting the company's sustained focus on strengthening mining infrastructure, enhancing coal evacuation capabilities and advancing its clean energy initiatives.
