Press Release Overview
On 21 October 2026, Daffodil Software announced the launch of Udai, an AI‑powered multilingual conversational avatar designed to provide Aadhaar‑related information to the public. The demonstration took place at Aadhaar Samvaad 2026 in Kolkata on 29 September, coinciding with the 17th Aadhaar Day, where attendees observed Udai listening, responding and gesturing in real time in the language of the user.
Product Description and Capabilities
Udai is built to answer common Aadhaar questions—such as required documents for address changes, update costs, and procedures for linking Aadhaar to bank accounts or mobile numbers—through natural spoken interaction. The avatar understands and speaks eleven languages: Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Odia and English. A user poses a query, Udai processes the speech, retrieves the relevant answer from an official UIDAI knowledge base, and replies in the same language with synchronized lip movements and expressive hand gestures.
Technical Architecture and Performance
Unlike typical AI avatars that depend on costly specialised graphics hardware, Udai uses pre‑filmed video footage for the visual component. Real‑time lip‑sync is achieved by lightweight processing that runs directly in a web browser, delivering a smooth experience at 24 frames per second on ordinary servers. This approach reduces per‑user cost dramatically, making a nationwide rollout for a programme serving hundreds of millions feasible.
Official Knowledge Base and Content Scope
All responses are sourced exclusively from verified UIDAI material, including frequently asked questions, provisions of the Aadhaar Act and other government policy documents. The covered topics encompass enrolment and registration, address and demographic updates, fees and eligibility, eKYC and Virtual ID, linking Aadhaar with bank accounts, PAN and mobile numbers, mAadhaar services and grievance redressal. Udai does not require users to phrase questions in a specific format; it can interpret everyday language in English, Hindi or mixed Hinglish and return the most relevant official information.
Safeguards and Compliance Measures
Udai incorporates three layers of protection:
1. Accuracy Layer – Answers are limited to the curated UIDAI knowledge base; queries outside Aadhaar scope trigger a guidance response rather than an answer.
2. Respect Layer – A screening module detects abusive or offensive language in English, Hindi and Hinglish before the query reaches the assistant.
3. Misuse Prevention Layer – The system blocks attempts to impersonate Udai, reveal internal architecture or solicit information beyond its authorised domain, with checks operating instantly to avoid user‑perceived latency.
Rollout Plan
The deployment will occur in two phases. Phase 1 places Udai kiosks inside Aadhaar Centres, allowing visitors to obtain information and understand processes such as document requirements for address changes, thereby freeing centre staff from repetitive queries. Phase 2 will integrate Udai into the Aadhaar website and mobile application, replacing the existing text‑based chatbot—also developed by Daffodil Software—with the richer voice‑driven experience.
