Humanitarian Relief Package

Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, Founder and Chairman of VPS Health, announced a humanitarian recovery programme totalling Rs 2.6 crore for families affected by the June road accident on Emirates Road in Dubai, where a minibus carrying workers collided with a stationary truck, killing seven workers and injuring nine.

Beneficiaries – Deceased Workers

The relief initiative provides Rs 26 lakh to the family of each deceased worker. The six Indian victims were from Telangana (three) and Uttar Pradesh (three):

  • Saleem Sayyed Hussain, 51, Jagitial district, Telangana – survived by wife Sayyad Goreebee and three children, one with health challenges and an elder daughter whose marriage was being arranged.
  • Abdul Rafiq Abdul Raheem, 37, Nirmal district, Telangana – survived by wife Raziya Begum and daughter Rida Fathima; his father Abdul Rahan had previously lost two children in a 2015 road accident.
  • Thirupathi Gollapally Chandraiah, 23, Jagitial district, Telangana – survived by parents; he had been in the UAE for seven months, sharing his adjustment experiences.
  • Abdul Rasheed Zakir Husain, 38, Mau district, Uttar Pradesh – survived by wife Farida Khatoon and three young daughters; he had left for Dubai two months before the tragedy, promising it would be his last journey abroad.
  • Markandey Chauhan Bhajjan Chauhan, 39, Mau district, Uttar Pradesh – survived by wife Sarswati Devi and three children, including 17‑year‑old Ankita Chauhan who completed Grade 12 and expressed a wish to pursue BSc Nursing. Dr Vayalil pledged support for her education and a future opportunity in the UAE.
  • Mohammad Saqib Liyaqat Ali, 31, Bijnor district, Uttar Pradesh – survived by his mother and sisters; he had been an aluminium fabricator and had gone to Dubai for the first time eight months earlier.

A representative also visited the family of Samuvel Rengasami, 34, a Sri Lankan worker from Mullaitivu district, who was the sole breadwinner for his wife Rajarathnaraja Jeevarani and their young daughter.

Education Support

Beyond the cash assistance, VPS Health is assessing further education support for children of the deceased, coordinating directly with each family. Ankita Chauhan’s aspiration to study nursing was specifically acknowledged, with Dr Vayalil stating the company would help her complete the course and consider bringing her to the UAE thereafter.

Injured Workers Assistance

Financial assistance was also extended to the nine injured survivors, distributed according to injury severity and recovery needs. The injured cohort comprised eight Indian nationals (three from Uttar Pradesh, two from Rajasthan, and one each from Kerala, Telangana, and Bihar) and one Nepali national. Four received the amount while still in the UAE; three who had returned to India had the support transferred to their accounts; two critically injured workers still undergoing treatment in Dubai also received payments into their accounts.

Distribution Logistics

Representatives of Dr Vayalil’s office travelled across rural Telangana and Uttar Pradesh to hand over the cash assistance in person, and a separate delegation travelled from Colombo to Mullaitivu district in Sri Lanka to meet the Sri Lankan family.

Overall Impact

The programme aims to provide immediate financial relief of Rs 26 lakh per deceased worker’s family and to facilitate continued education for their children, while also addressing the urgent needs of injured survivors through tailored assistance based on injury severity.
