Preclinical Data Presentation

Evaxion A/S (NASDAQ:EVAX) disclosed preclinical results for its cytomegalovirus (CMV) vaccine program EVX‑V1 at the International Herpesvirus Workshop 2026 held in Montreal, Canada. The data, released on 12 July 2026, demonstrated that AI‑discovered T‑cell epitopes enhanced control of acute infection, latency and reactivation in CMV‑infected mouse models.

Vaccine Composition and Platform

EVX‑V1 integrates AI‑identified antigens with AI‑optimized versions of established CMV vaccine antigens, comprising protective B‑cell antigens, T‑cell epitopes and structurally optimized B‑cell antigens. Earlier preclinical work had shown that novel B‑cell antigens reduced viral infection in animal models and that optimized structural B‑cell antigens mediated viral neutralisation.

Executive Commentary

Birgitte Rønø, Chief Scientific Officer and Chief Operating Officer of Evaxion, stated that the new data will guide antigen selection for a broadly protective CMV vaccine candidate and represent a significant step forward for the EVX‑V1 programme.

CMV Disease Burden

CMV infects approximately 60 % to 70 % of adults in developed countries. Congenital infection occurs in about one in 200 newborns, and one‑fifth of those infants develop disabilities or long‑term health problems, including intellectual impairment, vision loss and hearing loss.

Market Context

The global CMV treatment market was valued at $474.6 million in 2023 and is projected to expand at a 6.6 % compound annual growth rate from 2024 through 2032. Patients with weakened immune systems, such as organ‑transplant recipients, are at risk of severe ocular, pulmonary and hepatic complications.

Financial Position

Evaxion trades with a market capitalisation of $26.44 million, reflecting a 33.5 % decline in share price year‑to‑date. According to InvestingPro, the company holds more cash than debt, though cash burn is rapid, a typical characteristic of clinical‑stage biotechnology firms.

Additional Pipeline Activity

In the same workshop, Evaxion also presented preclinical data for EVX‑04, an experimental therapeutic vaccine targeting acute myeloid leukaemia. The data indicated promising immune‑recognition and activation in human cells, with antigens driving specific immune responses and inducing targeted cell‑killing in both mouse and human cell assays.

Future Data Releases

Evaxion announced plans to present further data on the CMV vaccine candidate at the upcoming sessions of the International Herpesvirus Workshop.
