Exxaro Resources Ltd expanded its Matla coal mine to supply over 9 million tonnes annually to Eskom’s plant through 2043.
The contract, signed last month, secures coal deliveries for two decades, aiding a grid that still derives ~80% of power from coal.
Coal head Caroline Shirindza said coal will stay a key energy source as Eskom adds wind, solar and gas capacity.
The expansion aligns with South Africa’s continued reliance on coal despite renewable additions.
