Fervo Energy shares jumped roughly 15% on Tuesday morning after a Wall Street Journal report disclosed that the geothermal developer had secured its largest‑ever power agreement with Alphabet’s Google.

Deal Structure

The contract obligates Fervo to supply nearly 400 megawatts of electricity generated at its Cape Station project in southwestern Utah, a capacity described as sufficient to power a midsize city. Google will purchase this power for a future data‑center operation in Utah, although the exact site has not yet been identified.

Project Investment and Timeline

Fervo is allocating more than US$2 billion to develop the Cape Station facility, which it intends to evolve into the world’s largest enhanced geothermal power plant. The company expects to begin feeding electricity from the first phase into the regional grid later this calendar year, with full delivery to Google scheduled for 2028.

Expansion Option

Google holds an option to increase the contracted capacity by approximately 600 megawatts, exercisable by June 2030, subject to the attainment of state and local regulatory approvals and community consent.

Lucia Tian, Google’s director of advanced energy technologies, stated that while the precise data‑center location remains unclear, the agreement represents a foundational element for powering Google’s future Utah data‑center presence.
