GCC CSR Spending Overview

The Sattva Consulting and India Data Insights report titled “Rs 3,661 Crore CSR Spending is Only the Beginning” finds that Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in India have increased their corporate social responsibility (CSR) outlay 6.4‑fold over the last ten years, reaching Rs 3,661 crore in FY 2024‑25. This amount represents approximately 9 percent of total corporate philanthropy in India.

Growth Dynamics

CSR spending by GCCs grew at a 20.4 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR), outpacing the overall Indian CSR growth of 15 percent CAGR. The acceleration is attributed mainly to Pure GCCs, whose CSR investments rose 8.6 times, while Hybrid GCCs grew 5.5 times over the same period. The analysis is based on Ministry of Corporate Affairs data spanning FY 2014‑15 to FY 2024‑25 and covers around Rs 24,000 crore in CSR across 906 confirmed GCCs.

Sectoral Allocation of CSR Funds

  • Education remains the dominant focus, featuring among the top CSR priorities in 11 of 13 industries and accounting for 34 to 52 percent of GCC CSR spending across most sectors in FY 2023‑25. The emphasis is on skilling, capacity‑building, and digital education aligned with long‑term workforce needs.
  • Environmental interventions received Rs 228 crore, directed toward water management and afforestation, reflecting growing concerns around data‑centre water usage and operational footprints.
  • Innovation‑linked projects attracted only Rs 435 crore, representing 4 percent of total GCC CSR spending over FY 2023‑25, indicating a sizable opportunity for leveraging GCC technical capabilities.

Geographic Concentration

More than 65 percent of GCC CSR funds are deployed in Tier‑1 cities—Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi NCR, Mumbai, and Hyderabad. Among the top ten districts receiving CSR, Nashik is the sole Tier‑2 city, with Rs 104 crore allocated during FY 2023‑25.
