Rating Change

Goldman Sachs downgraded Vale SA (ticker VALE) from "Buy" to "Neutral" on 27 July 2026, reducing its 12‑month price target from $18 to $16.

Catalysts & Market Outlook

The broker cited limited short‑term catalysts, expecting lower metal prices. It projects iron‑ore prices to stay around $100 per tonne, which it views as near the peak of the current cycle due to rising global supply and muted demand growth. For base metals, Goldman sees limited price appreciation and does not anticipate meaningful copper production growth for Vale until the 2030s.

Valuation Assessment

Goldman noted a more than 70 % rise in Vale’s share price since January 2025, making the current valuation less attractive. The bank highlighted a free‑cash‑flow yield of roughly 7 % per year (about 15 % cumulative by end‑2028) as insufficient. Vale’s Australian peers trade at a 20 % premium, consistent with a five‑year historical average. The valuation methodology was changed to a 50/50 blend of discounted cash flow and a 12‑month forward EV/EBITDA approach, using a weighted average cost of capital of 9.0 %, beta of 1.10, and an EV/EBITDA multiple of 5.2×—approximately a 20 % discount to the 6.6× average target multiple of peers BHP, Rio Tinto and Fortescue.

Financial Estimates

Ahead of its second‑quarter results, Goldman expects Vale’s pro‑forma EBITDA to be $3.9 billion, roughly flat versus Q1 and in line with Visible Alpha consensus. The bank raised its EBITDA forecasts for 2026, 2027 and 2028 by 2 %, 4 % and 5 % respectively, citing better price realization from portfolio optimisation and anticipated cost normalisation linked to oil‑price trends.

Relative Performance

Since Vale was added to Goldman’s Americas Buy List on 21 November 2023, the stock has underperformed the S&P 500, falling 6.8 % while the index has risen 63.3 % over the same period.

Potential Regulatory Change

Goldman mentioned that a possible amendment to Brazil’s “cavity framework” could improve Vale’s competitive position in iron ore, but any material impact is not expected before the next two to three years.
