AI Project Financing and Political Risk

During Goldman Sachs’ quarterly earnings call on Tuesday, CEO David Solomon highlighted that financing needs for AI projects are expanding and that pressure on rates could influence the returns and viability of such projects. He cautioned investors to watch for political volatility surrounding AI or data‑center locations ahead of the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, noting that heightened political uncertainty could affect project financing.

Solomon emphasized that client demand for compute power currently exceeds supply, and Goldman Sachs remains highly selective about the risk it underwrites and the capital it commits to AI initiatives, especially as client financing requirements become larger and more complex. He also acknowledged broader industry concerns about the accelerating pace of AI technology and the unchecked advancement of frontier models.

Economic Outlook and Market Conditions

Solomon described the overall health of the U.S. economy as solid and pointed out that the bank’s deals backlog remains very robust. He added that renewed geopolitical tensions and ongoing disruptions to energy flows add complexity to the outlook, while financing activities have become a larger and more durable component of Goldman’s markets businesses.

Treasury Yield and Interest‑Rate View

The CEO stated that a 5% level for the 10‑year U.S. Treasury yield does not alarm him regarding the operating environment. However, Goldman Sachs’ CFO warned that increased volatility in interest rates could create headwinds for the firm’s activities.

M&A Stance and Succession

Regarding mergers and acquisitions in the asset and wealth‑management segments, Solomon said the bank maintains a very high bar for strategic, financial, and cultural fit. He also confirmed that there is currently no succession transition plan or timeline in place for Goldman Sachs.
