Overview

The Grand Cliff Resort, Munnar, developed and operated by GF Hotels and Resorts Pvt Ltd, has been awarded the Government of India’s 5‑star classification, the highest tier in the nation’s official hospitality rating system. The classification follows a rigorous, multi‑stage evaluation that includes committee reviews and on‑site inspections covering service quality, operational standards, facilities, sustainability, human‑resource efficiency and guest satisfaction.

Classification Details

India’s 5‑star tier is reserved for properties that meet the highest standards across every assessed parameter. The Grand Cliff’s receipt of this rating formally recognises the resort’s commitment to delivering luxury experiences that were positioned since its opening.

Property Features

The resort is situated near Lakshmi estate in Munnar town, on the Kallar‑Mankulam Road in Viripara, and spreads across forest, tea‑garden and plantation land. It comprises 68 rooms, suites and villas anchored by a central Palace Block with interiors inspired by European classical architecture. Guest amenities include an infinity pool overlooking a waterfall and tea‑estate views, a dedicated Western spa, sauna, yoga sessions set in the forest, and the Eagle Park – an in‑resort theme park constructed over three years by approximately 300 artisans.

CSR and Community Initiatives

The Grand Cliff undertakes several corporate‑social‑responsibility programmes aimed at the tribal communities of the region. Initiatives include supporting children through emotional and technical development programmes, regular plastic‑removal campaigns, broader waste‑management awareness drives, and the Green Club project focused on skill development and creating cleaner living spaces for the local population.

International Engagements

The resort hosted the International Women’s Conference on Gender‑Inclusive and Responsible Tourism, organised by the United Nations, where delegates from multiple countries discussed safe, gender‑inclusive travel. During the event, Kerala was recognised as a safe destination for women‑only travel. The property has also hosted the UN World Women Conference on Sustainable Tourism and Safe Travel, and welcomed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who stayed at the resort from 12 January 2025 to 14 January 2025.

Significance

A government 5‑star rating serves as a trusted marker for Indian and international travellers, especially for high‑value occasions such as weddings, honeymoons and corporate events, providing assurance on facilities, service and operational standards. The classification, combined with the resort’s gender‑inclusive tourism initiatives and community‑focused CSR work, positions The Grand Cliff to compete directly with established luxury addresses across India while offering a distinctive price point for the Munnar market.

Quote

"This classification reflects years of planning translated into a working standard of service," said a Grand Cliff Resort spokesperson, adding that the resort intends to build on the benchmark rather than merely hold it.
