Product Launch Overview

Greenwater Scientific, an Indian biotechnology firm, announced the commercial availability of its greenwaterHOME Air Synthesizer across India at a retail price of ₹63,720. The device integrates a living micro‑algae culture that performs photosynthesis to absorb indoor carbon dioxide and release oxygen, complemented by a three‑stage filtration system comprising a pre‑filter, an H13‑grade HEPA filter made of microfibre glass, and an activated carbon fibre filter with a honeycomb mesh for VOC removal.

Technical Performance and Test Results

The company conducted sealed‑room laboratory tests in an insulated 8 ft × 8 ft × 8 ft chamber that initially contained >3,000 ppm CO₂. Measurements were taken every 15 minutes from 14 Nov 2025 to 12 Dec 2025. With the Air Synthesizer operating, CO₂ concentrations fell by an average of 32 % per hour (±3 %), reaching below 1,000 ppm in approximately three hours; without the unit, CO₂ levels remained above 3,000 ppm. An NABL‑accredited laboratory recorded a 95.1 % reduction in PM2.5, 95.7 % reduction in PM10, and 77.9 % reduction in benzene under the same test conditions.

Oxygen Generation Capability

Laboratory analysis measured the device’s oxygen output at 46 litres per day, a figure that would require roughly 80 houseplants to match, given that a typical indoor plant produces about 0.4 litres of oxygen daily. This demonstrates the superior photosynthetic efficiency of micro‑algae, which perform photosynthesis across their entire cellular surface.

Design and User Experience

The Air Synthesizer is engineered to function as a side‑table, featuring a flat top suitable for a coffee mug, photo frame, or books. Its transparent panel allows users to observe the micro‑algae culture transition from pale to deep green as it proliferates, providing a visual cue of CO₂ uptake. The device also incorporates conventional filtration: the HEPA layer captures fine dust and smoke particles, while the activated carbon layer adsorbs volatile organic compounds such as benzene emitted from paints, cleaning agents, and furniture.

Development Background

The product results from more than three years of research and development, building on technology originally developed at the University of California, San Diego. Greenwater Scientific cultivates each micro‑algae culture in its own photobioreactor laboratory at its Gurugram headquarters before shipping the cultures with the unit. The company’s founders, Dhruv Mehta and Sumir Mehta, conceived the idea after viewing a Netflix documentary on the efficiency of algae and phytoplankton in photosynthesis.

Company Credentials

Greenwater Scientific has participated in the Blackstone LaunchPad Accelerator, received U.S. Congressional recognition, and won the Grand Prize at UC San Diego’s Triton Innovation Challenge. Manufacturing is based in Manesar, Haryana. The full NABL test report and high‑resolution product images are available on request.
