Expansion Projects Overview

GRSE is undertaking brownfield capacity expansion at three locations in West Bengal with total capital expenditure of ₹2670 crore:

  • Raichak facility: ₹2500 crore investment
  • Timber Pond facility, Shalimar: ₹100 crore investment
  • Damodar facility, Khidderpore Docks: ₹70 crore investment

Project Details and Specifications

Raichak Facility

  • Signed lease agreement with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata for 32-acre riverside property
  • 356-metre waterfront with 96-metre jetty
  • 8–10 metre draught capability
  • Development as shipbuilding hub with 200-metre dry dock, slipway, launching pad, jetties, and block fabrication facilities
  • Capable of constructing warships up to 200 metres and commercial vessels up to 60,000 DWT
  • Enhanced capabilities in warship construction and refit, plus construction and repair of small and medium-sized commercial vessels

Shalimar Facility

  • 4-acre Timber Pond facility
  • ₹100 crore investment for rejuvenation
  • Medium-sized shipbuilding and repairs
  • Restoration of 130-metre dry dock
  • Construction of 120-metre slipway

Khidderpore Docks Facility

  • Damodar facility comprising old workshop and 25-metre waterfront
  • ₹70 crore investment
  • Medium-sized vessel repairs
  • Construction of electric ferries and other small crafts

Yantra India Limited Expansion

Two facilities at Metal and Steel Factory (MSF), Ishapore with combined investment of over ₹750 crore:

  • ₹277.59 crore Heavy Duty Hydraulic Open Die Forging Press (3,000-ton capacity replacing 2,650-ton press) for gun barrels, ammunition components, and heavy defence forgings
  • ₹473.84 crore Radial Forging Plant for super alloy forgings, aerial bomb tubes, ordnance hardware, railway axles, and nuclear reactor components
  • Features Industry 4.0 and energy-efficient technologies
  • Aims to enhance high-end manufacturing, reduce import dependence, and support defence, railway and strategic sectors

Company Background

GRSE is a Navratna Public Sector Undertaking under Ministry of Defence, established in 1884. The company has built over 800 platforms including 118 warships for Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and friendly foreign countries - highest number of warships built & delivered by any Indian shipyard. GRSE has four distinct shipyards and can undertake concurrent construction of 28 ships at a time.
