GRSE Launches Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel Shreyas

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) launched Yard 3040, named 'Shreyas', a Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) at its Kolkata facility on October 10, 2026. The launch ceremony was performed by Mrs. Reyman Kochhar in the presence of Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, along with senior dignitaries from the Indian Navy, Ministry of Defence, GRSE, and industry partners.

The NGOPV construction program is being concurrently undertaken at two Indian shipyards: GRSE in Kolkata and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in Goa. These vessels are indigenously designed and built, representing a significant milestone in the Indian Navy's pursuit of indigenous shipbuilding capabilities. The ships are named after India's rich heritage, with 'Shreyas' meaning 'Best' or 'Most Excellent' in Sanskrit.

Operationally, the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels will augment the existing OPVs/NOPVs for multi-domain operations including maritime surveillance, search and rescue missions, protection of offshore assets, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), and anti-piracy missions. The launch aligns with the Government of India's vision of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) and 'Make in India' initiatives, emphasizing domestic defense manufacturing capabilities.
