Milestone in Prostate Cancer Radiation Therapy
HCG Cancer Hospital Mumbai announced that it has treated more than 125 prostate cancer patients with advanced Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT). The treatments were delivered using the Versa HD radiation platform and, for selected cases, the CyberKnife robotic system – Mumbai’s first and only CyberKnife installation.
SBRT provides a highly focused radiation dose over just five outpatient sessions, eliminating the need for surgical incisions, prostate removal, or prolonged hospital stays. Patients return home after each session, making the regimen especially suitable for elderly individuals or those unsuitable for surgery.
The treated cohort spans intermediate‑risk, high‑risk, and selected metastatic prostate cancer categories. The majority of patients were aged between 60 and 75 years, with approximately 20 patients in the 75‑85 age bracket.
According to the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN 2022) from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC‑WHO), India reported an estimated 37,948 new prostate cancer cases in 2022, a figure projected to increase to roughly 82,252 cases per year by 2045, underscoring the growing need for non‑surgical treatment options.
Dr Trinanjan Basu, Head of Department and Senior Consultant Radiation Oncology at HCG Cancer Hospitals, Mumbai, emphasized that many patients mistakenly believe surgery is the only cure and highlighted that SBRT offers a precise, incision‑free alternative when patient age, cancer stage, risk category, overall health, and personal preferences are considered. He noted that the Versa HD platform’s advanced image guidance protects nearby organs such as the bladder and rectum.
