Announcement

HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company Limited, in collaboration with the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), used the official send‑off ceremony for India’s contingent to the 5th Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan, to unveil its upcoming enhanced version of the PlayAble app, scheduled for launch in December 2026. The new version is designed to deepen engagement with para‑athletes by simplifying entry pathways, particularly the classification process, which is often a barrier for grassroots participants.

App Features and Objectives

The current PlayAble platform already enables para‑athletes to locate training facilities, connect with coaches and interact with peers across the country. The upgraded app will introduce a user‑friendly classification guide that offers intuitive, step‑by‑step information on eligibility and sport selection, targeting the 3‑4% of India’s 15% disabled population that may qualify for Paralympic pathways. Additionally, PlayAble will incorporate a backend database to capture emerging talent, thereby increasing visibility for grassroots athletes and facilitating talent identification for national programmes.

Corporate Background and Scale

HDFC ERGO is a digital‑first general insurer, promoted by HDFC Bank Limited and ERGO International AG, the primary insurance arm of Munich Re Group. The company operates approximately 250 physical branches and more than 650 digital offices nationwide. About 86% of its services are delivered digitally, with 12% of those interactions powered by artificial intelligence. In FY26, HDFC ERGO issued roughly 4.2 crore insurance policies across health, motor, home, agriculture, travel, credit, cyber, personal accident, and various corporate lines such as property, marine, engineering, and liability.

Executive Remarks

Parthanil Ghosh, Managing Director & CEO of HDFC ERGO, emphasized that the World Health Organization/International Paralympic Committee’s “WeThe15” initiative indicates that 15% of the global population lives with a disability, and 3‑4% could be eligible for Paralympic competition. He described the upgraded PlayAble as a tool to unlock this untapped sporting potential by providing clearer access and information. Devendra Jhajharia, President of the PCI, praised the initiative for enhancing visibility and understanding of para‑sport pathways, noting that the app helps build a stronger, more inclusive pipeline for Indian para‑athletes.
