Launch Overview
HDFC securities, a subsidiary of HDFC Bank, announced the launch of SKY Direct, an instant, bank‑linked funding feature integrated into its digital investment platform HDFC SKY and available exclusively to HDFC Bank savings‑account holders who also maintain a HDFC SKY trading account.
Mechanism and Operational Flow
SKY Direct operates on a Hold‑Release‑Transfer (HRT) mechanism. When a customer selects an amount to add, the specified sum is placed on hold in the linked HDFC Bank savings account and is immediately reflected as a usable limit in the HDFC SKY trading account. At the close of the trading day, only the portion of the held amount that was actually used for executed trades is transferred to HDFC SKY for settlement; any remaining balance is automatically released back to the customer’s bank account. This usage‑based settlement eliminates the need for pre‑funding, removes idle broker balances, and reduces opportunity cost and mental‑accounting effort.
Product Capabilities at Launch
The feature supports instant funding across multiple segments: equity cash trading, futures and options (F&O), and the Margin Trading Facility (MTF). It also enables users to start recurring stock systematic investment plans (SIPs) without setting up separate auto‑pay mandates or awaiting e‑mandate approvals. In addition, SKY Direct bypasses the standard UPI‑based IPO bidding ceiling of INR 5 lakh, allowing customers to place IPO bids beyond that limit through a direct bank‑to‑bank mechanism.
User Experience
Investors can view their live HDFC Bank balance on the “Add Funds” screen within the HDFC SKY app, choose a predefined or custom amount, and see the funds instantly available as trading limits, without waiting for UPI or net‑banking transfers. The speed of fund availability is positioned as advantageous in volatile market conditions where funding delays could cause missed trading opportunities.
Demat Debit and Pledge Instruction (DDPI) Integration
For customers who have not previously enabled DDPI, the activation journey automatically turns on this functionality, permitting share sales, use of MTF, and pledging of securities for margin without the need for daily TPIN, eDIS, or OTP authorisations.
Activation Process
The onboarding is fully digital and can be completed within minutes on the HDFC SKY mobile application. The steps include mobile‑number verification using the HDFC Bank‑linked number, Aadhaar‑based identity verification, and an electronic signature to authorise the HRT mechanism.
Strategic Rationale
By keeping funds in the investor’s bank account until settlement and automating the release of unused balances, SKY Direct aims to deliver improved liquidity, reduced friction, and a more transparent funding experience, reinforcing HDFC securities’ commitment to a fast, intuitive, digital‑first investing platform.
Executive Comment
“With SKY Direct, we are taking the friction out of funding so that investors can focus on their ideas, not on moving money,” said Dhiraj Relli, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of HDFC securities. “Customers can see their HDFC Bank balance, add funds in a click, and pay only for what they trade at the end of the day.”
