Event Summary

Hindalco Industries Limited has commissioned a greenfield Superfine PPT ATH (Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate) manufacturing plant in Belagavi, Karnataka. This represents India's first domestic production facility for this high-value specialty alumina product.

Plant Specifications

  • Location: Belagavi, Karnataka
  • Product: Superfine PPT ATH (Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate)
  • Phase 1 Capacity: 30,000 tonnes per annum
  • Expansion Potential: Designed for phased expansion to 60,000 tonnes capacity
  • Energy Source: Operates entirely on renewable energy (biomass, solar, and wind sources)
  • Technology: Fully developed in-house through Hindalco's flask-to-factory innovation journey

Product Application and Market Context

PPT ATH is a high-value, halogen-free flame-retardant material used in:

  • Halogen-Free Flame Retardant (HFFR) cables
  • Polymer insulators
  • Thermal insulation
  • Composites and paints
  • Electric vehicle applications

The material helps suppress flame propagation and smoke generation without releasing halogen acid gases, supporting safer electrical and infrastructure systems. Demand is growing due to stricter fire-safety standards, rising EV adoption, and shift toward sustainable materials.

Market Impact

The Phase 1 capacity of 30,000 tonnes per annum is designed to meet almost the entire domestic demand for safer cables from the wire and cable industry, reducing import dependence.

Management Commentary

Satish Pai, Managing Director: "The commissioning of our Superfine precipitated hydrate plant in Belagavi will further strengthen our leadership position, and enhance our high-value specialty alumina portfolio in India. This investment reflects Hindalco's focus on creating value, moving up the value chain and delivering advanced solutions."

Saurabh Khedekar, CEO, Alumina Business: "The addition of Superfine PPT ATH strengthens our Specialty Alumina portfolio and reinforces our focus on innovation-led growth. Our InnoSafe solution enhances fire safety by retarding flame spread and suppressing smoke, enabling safer and more sustainable infrastructure."

Sustainability Features

The plant operates at Hindalco's Belagavi refinery, which achieved a GHG intensity of 0.44 tCO2e per tonne of alumina (YTD FY26). The facility is powered by 100% renewable energy, making it the world's only specialty alumina plant to operate entirely on renewable energy.

Technical Features

The plant incorporates automated controls for critical processes and a fully integrated manufacturing ecosystem, enabling stringent control over feedstock quality and product consistency.
