Indian Railways has approved a ₹233 crore project for the provision of Electronic Interlocking systems at 21 stations in the Samastipur Division of East Central Railway. The approved work involves replacement of existing Panel Interlocking systems with modern Electronic Interlocking technology, which represents a significant upgrade to the railway's signalling infrastructure. This modernization initiative will facilitate the implementation of Kavach, India's indigenous Automatic Train Protection system, across the division.
The Electronic Interlocking system replaces ageing relay-based systems with computer-based interlocking, offering several operational advantages including higher reliability, faster fault diagnosis, easier maintenance, and enhanced operational flexibility. The project is part of Indian Railways' continued efforts toward modernizing signalling systems, strengthening railway safety, and enhancing operational efficiency across its network. The announcement was made on September 1, 2026, through the Press Information Bureau.
