Indian Railways has approved the provision of Kavach Version 4.0, India's indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, on 660 route kilometers of the Izzatnagar Division of North Eastern Railway. The approval comes with an estimated cost of ₹295 crore and falls under the umbrella work "Provision of Kavach with communication backbone of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) on balance sections of Indian Railways."
The Kavach system is designed to prevent Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) incidents and train collisions through continuous monitoring of train movements. The system automatically applies brakes whenever required, enables trains to safely operate at maximum permissible speeds, improves operational reliability, and supports safe train operations even during adverse weather conditions such as dense fog. This specific approval covers the balance sections of the Izzatnagar Division of North Eastern Railway and will further strengthen the safety infrastructure on the identified railway sections.
