Indian Railways has successfully launched India's first hydrogen-powered train, which commenced operations between Jind and Sonipat on July 17, 2026. The train has already traveled over 1,200 kilometers, achieving significant fuel savings by replacing more than 3,200 liters of diesel consumption with clean hydrogen technology.

The hydrogen train generates electricity onboard through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water vapor as a by-product with no smoke or tailpipe carbon emissions. This makes it the cleanest form of rail propulsion currently available. The 10-coach train configuration includes two Hydrogen Driving Power Cars that deliver a total of 2,400 kW power, supported by lithium iron phosphate batteries and high-pressure hydrogen cylinders.

The project features India's first dedicated hydrogen storage facility at Jind, capable of storing green hydrogen at pressures up to 500 bar and dispensing it at 350 bar, with total storage capacity of approximately 3,000 kg. The system incorporates multiple independent safety systems including leak detection, heat and flame sensors, automatic shut-off systems, and continuous ventilation, all designed to meet international standards with mandatory validation.

Following the successful operation on the Jind-Sonipat route, Indian Railways plans to begin trials on the Delhi route soon. This indigenous project represents more than just a technological achievement—it establishes a complete hydrogen rail ecosystem and demonstrates India's commitment to sustainable, zero-emission rail mobility, positioning the country for future expansion and potential global leadership in clean transportation.
