Infosys Foundation, the philanthropic and CSR arm of Infosys Limited, announced the inauguration of cardio-obstetric healthcare facilities at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) in Chennai, which is run by Madras Medical College (MMC).
The foundation has provided a grant of over ₹31 crore to strengthen MMC's cardio-obstetric care facilities across its hospitals. The funding supports:
- Establishment of an exclusive cardio-obstetric outpatient unit
- A state-of-the-art cardio obstetric catheterization laboratory at the Institute of Cardiology at RGGGH
- Management of patients under MMC's research programs
The initiative is part of a broader collaboration that began in August 2024 when Infosys Foundation inaugurated a special facility at the Institute of Social Obstetrics equipped with a high-risk antenatal ward and critical care facilities.
The grant will contribute to two major research programs:
1. National Pregnancy and Cardiac Diseases (NPAC) study - described as the largest global single-center study on pregnancy-related heart disease
2. Tamil Nadu Pregnancy and Heart Disease Registry (TNPHDR) - described as the largest registry in the world in this domain
The main objective of these research programs is to develop a care protocol for heart disease in pregnancy and evaluate its effectiveness in improving pregnancy outcomes.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Dr. K. G. Arunraj (Hon'ble Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu), Dr. Darez Ahamed (IAS, Secretary to Government, Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Tamil Nadu), Dr. K. Shantharaman (Dean, Madras Medical College and RGGGH), and Mr. Anil Kumar P. N. (Senior Vice President and Center Head, Chennai, Infosys).
Sunil Kumar Dhareshwar, Trustee of Infosys Foundation, stated the foundation aims to enhance maternal care by addressing cardiac complications during pregnancy and reduce maternal mortality while contributing to research for better healthcare solutions for women across the country.
Dr. K. Shantaraman, Director and Dean of Madras Medical College, acknowledged the support and stated the new units will establish MMC as a national and international leader in maternal healthcare and research.
